A client asked me last Tuesday, word for word, "Can you just make it personal, like Netflix, but for my course?" I laughed, because I have heard that before. Then I explained why Kajabi Learning Paths are not quite that, and why they can still work, if you do a bit of manual fiddling.
Introduction
A student emailed me at 11:47pm saying lesson five had disappeared. It had not.
She was a beginner. Another student in the same course had shot weddings for ten years. She wanted everything slowed down. He wanted to skip ahead. Kajabi Learning Paths sound like a feature you switch on. They are not. It is just cobbling tools together until it feels less generic.
Can One Kajabi Course Support Different Kajabi Learning Paths?
Short version: sort of. Long version, and sorry, the long version matters here: Kajabi will not look at a quiz answer and rewrite your whole course around that one student.
What actually works is duller, which is probably why nobody writes about it properly. A student answers a simple question at the start. You ask a question. You tag the answer. An automation sends a different email or opens a different product.
What Can Kajabi Do?
Here is what you have actually got. Not a wish list.
| What you want to do | The Kajabi tool that handles it |
|---|---|
| Release lessons over time | Drip content |
| Make students finish one step before the next | Locked content |
| Give different groups different products | Offers |
| Send different follow up emails | Automations |
| Group students by interest | Tags |
| Give access after a student takes an action | Automations linked to an offer |
| Build a fully different course structure | A separate course |
My favourite two are drip and lock. Drip is timing, lock is a gate, usually because you finished the previous lesson or passed a quiz. I have built whole Kajabi Learning Paths out of just those two, plus a tag or two I remembered to set up, and students never asked how it worked.
How to Create Different Learning Experiences
Start With One Core Course
I built three courses before I built one good one. Three!
So now I build the boring bit first. The bit everyone needs. Basics first. Then marketing. Then sales. Then growth. Keep the core shared, and Kajabi Learning Paths stay something you can maintain on a normal Tuesday, not something you dread opening when you have not had coffee yet.
Use Offers for Different Levels
Offers are about access, and I keep saying that to clients because it is the bit they get wrong. Kajabi calls them Offers and my brain hears discount code, when actually an Offer is just a package, it is what someone buys.
One person might just want the core course. Full stop.
Starter Offer: Core Course
Advanced Offer: Core Course plus an advanced course
VIP Offer: Core Course plus an advanced course plus coaching
One offer can hold more than one product, which is handy, I will give Kajabi that much. Link different products to different offers and you have got levels. Students see one package. Not a puzzle. A package.
Can a Quiz Decide a Student's Learning Path?
A quiz helps. It does not do everything, though, and if someone tells you it does, and they are trying to sell you something, run.
I once set a quiz up wrong and tagged 37 beginners as advanced. Thirty seven! A beginner gets a slower welcome sequence. An advanced student skips the intro.
Use Drip and Locked Content for Guided Paths
Sometimes students do not need different content at all, and this is weird to say in a post about personalisation, I know, but hear me out. They just need the same content, in the right order, and not all at once, because otherwise they open everything on day one, panic slightly, close the tab, and disappear for three weeks.
Week 1 opens Module 1
Week 2 opens Module 2
Week 3 opens Module 3
You can also make students pass a quiz before they move on, which I do when later lessons actually build on earlier ones, not just because it sounds strict, because strict for the sake of strict just annoys people. It will not feel fully personal, I will be honest about that. It will feel guided though, and guided beats overwhelming. For a lot of creators this is the most useful version of Kajabi Learning Paths.
When Should You Create Separate Courses?
There comes a point where one course just cannot stretch any further, and you can feel it when you are trying to write the lessons and nothing fits, like, physically feel it, in your gut, ugh. If the lessons are different and the examples are different and the end goal is different, you are forcing two courses into one skin, and students can tell, even if they cannot explain why it feels off, they just know.
What Is the Best Approach?
Keep it simple. Seriously, I mean that, even though simple sounds like lazy advice and I know it does, because I have given this advice before and had people look at me like, really, that is it? If everyone needs the same core training, one course will do most of the work. That balance is what makes Kajabi Learning Paths work for most people I talk to.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most mistakes here are not technical. They are about adding too much too soon, usually because someone, and I have been that someone, got excited in a planning meeting and said, what if we do twelve paths, and everyone nodded, and then nobody could maintain twelve paths.
Making too many paths: Give students ten choices and most of them will freeze, I promise you, I have watched it happen, it is painful to watch.
Hiding too much content: If a lesson is locked and no one explains why, students assume something is broken.
Creating separate courses too early: Do not build three courses when one good course would do.
Automating without testing: Tags and quizzes and offers and automations can trip over each other in ways you will not spot on paper, I promise you that too.
That test run takes ten minutes. Ten minutes!
Conclusion
So where does that leave you, practically, like what do you actually do on Monday morning, when you sit down with coffee, which I recommend, coffee helps, and you open Kajabi and think, right, what now? Kajabi can give different students different experiences, but it will not invent those experiences for you, and accepting that is half the battle, honestly, because once you accept it you stop waiting for a magic button and you just start building something sensible. That restraint is what keeps Kajabi Learning Paths useful instead of messy.
Need Help Building a Custom Kajabi Learning Experience?
If this feels tangled, and I get it if it does, because it felt tangled to me the first few times too, and also the tenth time, if I am honest, we can help you untangle it. We will map the course structure and the student routes first, then line up the offers and automations and quizzes to match, in that order, because order matters here, and I have learned that the hard way, by doing it in the wrong order, obviously.
Build My Kajabi CourseFAQs
Can one Kajabi Course have different learning paths?
Sort of, yes, but not in the way people usually mean it.
Can a Kajabi Quiz send students down different paths?
It can kick things off, yeah.
Can I show different content to different students in Kajabi?
You can, yeah, within limits, and limits are important here.
Can I use Tags to create different student experiences?
That is actually one of my favourite uses for them, because tags are so boring to talk about and so useful in practice.
Can Kajabi lock lessons until a student finishes the previous lesson?
Yes it can, and yes, students will email you about it.
Can I release different course content at different times?
Yes. Drip settings open modules after a set number of days.
Should I create separate Kajabi Courses for different student levels?
Hmm, depends, and I know that is annoying, sorry. Only if the lessons and outcomes are substantially different.
Can I duplicate a Kajabi Course?
Yes, thank god, because rebuilding from scratch is painful, and I have done it.
